What great teams have in common beyond talent
At the heart of Buddhist wisdom lies the concept of Muditā, that altruistic joy that celebrates the achievements of others. In a team, it's the ability to express happiness for someone else's excellence. Teams inhabited by the Muditã spirit stand together in victory and adversity alike.
Conversely, feelings of envy and jealousy dampen team spirit, collaboration, creativity and overall performance.
And you, do you have this Muditã spirit? And above all, do you cultivate an environment that facilitates and encourages this culture?
Inspired by an article in Harvard Business Review.
Collaboration
If you win, I win
"To build a strong team, you need to see someone else's quality as a complement to your weakness and not as a threat to your position or authority."
-Christine Caine
Teamwork
Growing Muditã
Here are a few ideas for cultivating this ability to see the good in everyone:
- Get to know yourself: what fear or belief is triggered when you feel threatened?
- Discover your greatest strengths and those of your colleagues to reduce feelings of guilt about certain tasks;
- Set collective rather than individual objectives;
- Reward the team rather than specific individuals.
When was the last time you took the time, as a team, to stop and really connect, beyond your daily tasks?
Your opportunity to cultivate Muditã further is right here.
