Balance sheet introduction
Perhaps you've heard of the "Great Resignation" movement? Indeed, the pandemic has accelerated this movement by causing people to introspect on their lives, on what's really important to them!
For the first time in the working world, people are leaving without a safety net, not necessarily knowing what awaits them on the other side. People aren't leaving for money, they're leaving in search of meaning:
-
Am I growing?
-
How do I look?
-
Am I contributing to a mission?
-
Am I recognized in my team?
These are just some of the questions people are asking.
Now, as a leader, what can you do to slow down this "Great Resignation"?
Here are 5 actions to bring more meaning to the people in your team:
1. Prioritize individual meetings
-
As often as possible, ideally every 2 weeks.
-
Start by asking the question, "How are you, really?"
-
Then take an interest in their priorities and ask them how you can help.
2. Establish collaboration agreements
-
Have the courage to name your expectations more clearly. No expectations without agreements.
-
Define operating rules in terms of roles and responsibilities, and interpersonal skills (e.g. how to deal with change).
3. Present a career development plan
-
People need to gain clarity about the next steps in your organization.
-
Openly communicate opportunities for advancement.
4. Encouraging recognition and conversation
-
Make recognition a team ritual. TeamTalk).
-
Team conversations aren't always rosy, they're not always pretty, but they can prevent a lot of ills.
5. Defining culture
-
What words describe how you behave together? (e.g. collaboration, fun, openness)
-
Translate these words into behaviors and live them every day (e.g., the things we will not tolerate in our team are...).
Conclusion
No... performance doesn't work against people! On the contrary, take care of your relationships. It's said that an "A" employee who leaves costs the company an average of 2x his or her annual salary.
Take care of your world and make something beautiful out of this "Great Resignation".
