Introducing "Food for Thought" #92. The formula is simple: three short messages 2x a month to feed your mind.

Sense of belonging

Why do your employees stay?

According to a recent Gallup studyOnly 16% of employees leave their jobs because of salary or benefits. In 84% of cases, the reasons are other: lack of meaning, cultural mismatch, lack of balance, weak interpersonal relationships, etc.

In other words, employees rarely stay for the money... but they often leave for lack of connection with the organization, the team or the manager. A sense of belonging is therefore an essential lever. We could compare it to the roots of a tree: if they are deep and solid, the tree will grow and bear fruit.

Neuroscience

5 social factors to cultivate a sense of belonging

Neuroscience (David Rock's SCARF model) shows that our social brain is constantly in survival mode, seeking to get closer to a reward or further away from a threat. Five key factors directly influence commitment to a group:

  1. Tribe - Are you with me or against me?
A sense of security with others.
  2. Expectations - Is it clear or confusing?
The ability to predict the future.
  3. Rank - Am I recognized or ignored?
    Status recognition.
  4. Autonomy - Do you limit or free me?
A sense of control over events.
  5. Fairness - Is it fair or unfair?
    A climate of fairness.

Commitment

4 questions to prevent an employee's departure

If your employees answer "yes" to these questions, they are unlikely to leave your organization:

  • Did he really feel APPRECIATED for what he brought to the table?
  • Did he understand how he made a DIFFERENCE?
  • Did he have a CHALLENGE up his sleeve?
  • Did he receive FEEDBACK to help him progress?
