Management

The 4 quadrants of excellence

In a recent interview on the Tim Ferriss Podcast, entrepreneur Danny Meyer shared the model he uses in his restaurants to evaluate his employees.

Quadrant 1: Can and will

  • Have the skills and motivation.
  • Those who inspire others to excel and are the pillars of the team you want to build on.

Quadrant 2: Can't but want to

  • Don't have the skills, but have the motivation.
  • The ones you really have to coach, but once you've done that, the rewards can be immense. Invest in them, train them, they're good for the culture.

Quadrant 3: Can but won't

  • Have the skills, but not the motivation
  • Those that are much better than their current performance would suggest. They'll never reach their full potential with their current habits, but it's not worth continuing to push them.

Quadrant 4: Can't and won't

  • Have neither the skills nor the motivation.
  • They're the bad apples that won't do the team any good. These individuals are detrimental to the yield and the crop.

    Leadership

    Practising optimism

Optimism is a state of mind that can be strengthened like a muscle through training. How can you achieve it? When a negative situation arises, try to see it from a different angle - even a positive one, if possible!

Visit a book which explains the concept.

      Teamwork

      Complementarity in a team

"To build a strong team, you need to see someone else's quality as a complement to your weakness, not as a threat to your position or authority."

      -Christine Caine
