Introducing "Food for Thought" #20. The formula is simple: three short messages once a week to feed your mind.
Leadership
To resolve a conflict
- Focus on what you have in common rather than your differences.
- Try to see the 1% truth in what the other person says.
- Be inspired by the common goal rather than the gap between your perspectives.
Recognition
Recognition as a performance tool
Recently, during a team building event, a participant confided in me his source of demotivation at work: "I love my job, I'm dedicated, but I never get any encouragement, it wears on me in the long run." Unfortunately, when surveying teams, lack of recognition is often the #1 factor in disengagement.
Here are a few ways you can be an agent of change in your organization:
- Give it without expecting anything in return. By giving, you create a movement and help change the culture.
- Pass it around in all directions. Recognition shouldn't always come from above. It's your responsibility to bring it up.
- Personalize it. Nothing is more powerful than knowing your partner's motivations and interests.
- Reward behavior. Rewarding results is commonplace, but we often forget to reward exemplary behavior.
Teamwork
Understanding your geniuses, your frustrations and your team
We're always amazed to see the results of Patrick Lencioni's 6 Geniuses at Work model with our customers. Basically, this tool helps you understand:
- Why do some tasks bring you joy while others exhaust you?
- How can you do better when you know your team members' areas of genius?
- How can we use team members' strengths to maximize meetings, projects and conversations?
- How do you reorient roles and responsibilities by knowing the genius of your team members?
