Introducing "Food for Thought" #33. The formula is simple: three short messages once a week to feed your mind.

Management

No labor shortage, but a shortage of good managers

According to Gallup52% of departing employees say that their manager or organization could have done something to retain them. According to the same source, a manager who is connected to his or her team will be able to spot the warning signs of a departure and defuse them well in advance. Here are 5 key actions that can make all the difference in your role as manager to your team:

  • Be the guardian of vision, meaning and coherence
  • Analyze team composition and position people in their strengths
  • Having frequent points of contact and giving people a space to be seen and heard
  • Relentless investment in the team's culture and DNA
  • Give recognition and celebrate successes on a regular basis

Innovation

Creating space for innovation

At Google, engineers are encouraged to devote 20% of their working time to a project of their choice. This concept, known as "Innovation time off", gives them complete autonomy. The result: around half of all new products (including Google Street View) are the result of engineers working on projects of their choice.

Leadership

Be yourself

"When we try to please everyone, we end up pleasing no one... least of all ourselves."

-Simon Sinek
