Introducing "Food for Thought" #42. The formula is simple: three short messages once a week to feed your mind.

Management

The main concern of today's leaders

How can we make people more responsible and accountable?

To unleash more motivation in your team, it starts with giving it:

  1. a strong and inspiring WHY
  2. the possibility for everyone to stay within their strengths
  3. clear expectations
  4. autonomy and the right to make mistakes
  5. frequent points of contact
  6. recognition & feedback

"Instead of asking how to motivate people, we should be asking how to create the conditions in which people will motivate themselves."
-Edward L. Deci

Motivation

"I want" vs. "I have to

In the same vein, if you want to boost motivation in your team, it starts with freeing up the energy of your employees. "autonomous motivationthe one that starts every sentence in your teams with "I want", rather than the one that starts every sentence in your teams with "I want".
"controlled motivation which begins with "I must".

The premise of the "I must" theory is that humans are primarily motivated by the carrot (salary bonus) or the stick (threat).
"Then you get donkeys!" Conversely, the "I want" theory, based on self-determination, argues that humans are more motivated if they feel secure, valued and competent.

Leadership

A powerful question

Think about your habits, your tendencies, your idiosyncrasies... Which of these are least aligned with the person you want to be? And which is the most aligned?
