Introducing "Food for Thought" #51. The formula is simple: three short messages once a week to feed your mind.

Leadership

What successful leaders have in common

Take a moment and recall a leader who had a negative impact on your career. What seemed to be his or her main motivation? Now recall a leader who inspired you. What motivated this leader?

Our hypothesis is that the former was primarily motivated by his personal ambitions, while the latter was motivated to help others. What if helping others was the best way to succeed as a leader? Adam Grant's research supports our hypothesis. People who help others achieve their goals are more likely to be successful themselves.

Here's a question to think about: Are you looking to be the best or to help others be better?

Management

Helping others to be better

Here are 2 questions to help you help others be better:

  1. How can I help you...? You can complete the sentence to make it clearer (to succeed in this project, to integrate into the team, to develop this skill, etc.).
  2. What do you need...? Here again, you can complete the sentence to be more specific (to shine, to meet the challenge, etc.).

Good thinking starts with good questions.
