Introducing "Food for Thought" #89. The formula is simple: three short messages 2x a month to feed your mind.

Connection

Start with curiosity

When you take over a new team, it can be tempting to judge on first impressions. Beware of cognitive biases: affinity bias makes you favor people who are similar to you, and the halo effect can make you draw conclusions about someone on first impressions.

Take the time to observe, listen and ask questions. Curiosity paves the way for a more objective view of your new team.

Trust

Invest in building trust

As Amy Edmondson points out in The Fearless Organizationsudden changes, such as the arrival of a new leader, can undermine trust and silence team voices, just when you need them most.

Create a space where people feel entitled to be true, to make mistakes and to ask questions. Without trust, there can be no innovation or performance.

Trust

Assess talent objectively

Use data to better understand each person's strengths and potential: past assessments, 360° analyses and psychometric tools. A clear and accurate picture of the team's talents will enable you to make more informed decisions about each person's roles and responsibilities.
